I am directed by the Secretary of State for India in Council to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated June 28th last, stating that the Directors of the Sub-marine Telegraph Companies have for some time past had under consideration various proposals for the improvement of the telegraphic cable service between England and India and our Trans-Indian Colonies, the object being two-fold, viz: the security of the telegraphic communication in times of political trouble or open war, and secondly, the increased efficiency of the service in regard to speed and accuracy, and regularity of transmission.
You point out that these objects can only be accomplished by the establishment of several alternative routes, and with that view the following additional lines are proposed, viz:
(1.) A cable from Alexandria to Port Said, in connection with a land line to be constructed along the Suez Canal to Suez;
(2.) A third cable along the northern coast of the Red Sea from Suez to Aden, and to Bombay;
